Letter to Retreatants

Dear Friend of Miles Christi,

We are very grateful that you have decided to attend the women’s Spiritual Exercises at St. Anthony's Retreat Center in Kalihi, Hawaii, directed and preached by the Priests of Miles Christi and encouraged by Fr. John Hardon, SJ. As our beloved Pope John Paul II stated, “The Exercises are, in fact, a set of meditations and prayers in an atmosphere of contemplation and silence, and, above all, a special interior impulse—deriving from the Holy Spirit—to open ample spaces of the soul to the action of grace.”

Miles Christi is a Religious Order committed to the preaching of these Ignatian Retreats for the lay faithful here and nationwide. In the past several years, numerous souls have made them with great spiritual benefit. Literally, they can be a life-changing event for you.

As Miles Christi Hawaii Spiritual Exercises Coordinator, I would like to inform you of various considerations for your upcoming Retreat:

The Ignatian retreat is comprised of Spiritual Talks based on the method of the Book of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, followed by the retreatants’ personal meditation. This is the core of the Ignatian silent retreat.

All the spiritual talks of this directed retreat will be presented by the Priests of Miles Christi and are in complete faithfulness to the Magisterium and tradition of the Catholic Church.
Miles Christi preaches these retreats throughout the country and in various different Catholic retreat houses. It contracts the use of these facilities. Miles Christi is not related to other programs conducted there.

The Priests will closely follow the Ignatian method in the presentation of the points of meditation. After presenting the points for reflection, a personal meditation is scheduled. Retreatants are expected to follow the schedule of the retreat. Since the Priests encourage attending the Ignatian retreat annually, every year they prepare a new set of Ignatian talks, with new handouts.

Besides offering Confession, the Priests of Miles Christi will be available throughout the retreat for personal spiritual conferences. This is another helpful tool for making your retreat more fruitful.

Other important elements of this retreat are the reverent celebration of the Holy Mass, Solemn Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction, visits to the Blessed Sacrament, the Holy Rosary, and Stations of the Cross.

Please bring your Bible, Rosary, and a notebook, as well as toiletries. The retreat house provides towels and bed linens. St. Ignatius’ book of the Spiritual Exercises and The Imitation of Christ will be available to assist you. You do not need to bring any other spiritual book. You may want to bring a sweater and umbrella as the weather may change during our retreat.

We begin Friday, Feb. 13th at 4:00 pm . Check in begins at 3:00 pm. Friday’s schedule also includes Holy Mass and dinner. Retreatants stay overnight and eat their meals at the retreat house. The last event is Mass on Sunday, February 15th , at 4:00 pm. The retreat will be at St. Anthony's Retreat Center, 3351 Kalihi St, Honolulu, HI 96819.

Silence throughout the retreat is an expressed stipulation of St. Ignatius. You will find that the external silence, the environment of recollection and devotion, will definitely allow God to work within your soul.

We try to keep the cost as affordable as possible. The non-refundable deposit of $100.00 includes primarily the retreat house rental, room and board, meals, plus a minimum expense for the Priests’ transportation, operational expenses, and materials. No Priest stipend is taken into account. Your generosity is always welcome to support this apostolate.

Important: If, unfortunately, you must cancel, please call me at 808-626-2469 at any time. Someone might be on the waiting list who would then be able to attend!

You are also welcome to invite others to attend. If you want to find out more information about Miles Christi and its nationwide Spiritual Exercises apostolate, visit www.mileschristi.org.

Finally and foremost, we encourage you to start your spiritual preparation. We are confident that you will draw abundant spiritual benefits from these heavenly days. Be assured of the prayers of Miles Christi for a fruitful retreat.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Melissa Crisostomo, Hawaii Retreat coordinator
